[at all]

1. 부정적인 생각을 강조할 때

I didn't understand anything at all.
나 1도 이해 못했어.
She was hardly frightened at all.
그녀는 거의 겁먹지 않았다.

2. if, ever, any와 함께 의문문에서 쓰임

Do you play poker at all?
너 포커 하긴 하니?
He'll come before supper if he comes at all.
그가 만~약에 온다면 저녁 전에 올거야.
You can come whenever you like - any time at all.
너가 원할 때 언제든 와 - 완전 언제든.

3. Not at all.

(특히 영국 영어에서) Thank you나 Do you mind if...?에 대한 다소 formal한 대답으로 쓰임.

[at first vs. first]

- at first: 상황의 처음에 대해 말하는데, 나중에 일어난 일과 대조될 때 쓰임. 보통 but이 따라나옴.

At first they were very happy, but then things started going wrong.
처음에 그들은 매우 행복했으나, 일이 잘못되기 시작했다.

The work was hard at first, but I got used to it.
처음에 그 일은 힘들었지만, 난 익숙해졌다.

나머지는 first 씀

That's mine - I saw it first!
그거 내 거야 - 내가 제일 처음 봤어!

We lived there when we were first married.
